FAC and MMF on livestreaming tariffs: ‘We need to talk!’

This guest column is by David Martin, CEO at the Featured Artists Coalition, and Annabella Coldrick, CEO at the Music Managers Forum:
Whether it’s COVID 19, Brexit, the yearning for live shows and international touring, the economics of streaming, or the constant battle against inequalities, there’s a lot going on in the music industry right now.
The news cycle has been unrelenting, and it’s little wonder that trade bodies like ours have experienced such a substantial increase in membership. People need help and support and, in a business hit harder than most, there’s a lot of fires to attend to.
The current debates around livestreaming touch upon many of these issues, and it’s why the FAC and MMF have been so vociferous about potential changes to the licensing regime – ever since we became aware late last year of PRS for Music’s intention to impose retrospective tariffs, rising as high as 17% of gross revenues on ticketed online events. (Compared to 4.2% of gross ticket sales at a normal “in-person” live show.)
In the middle of a pandemic – with artists and live industry workers being absolutely decimated financially, and with livestreaming offering one of the only mechanisms to perform in front of an audience – the difference felt pretty staggering.

Martin Goldschmidt: ‘Why I have come round to the user-centric model’ (guest column)

User-centric payouts has been bubbling on the fringes of the music industry for years as an issue. The first time I took it seriously was at an industry board meeting last year – no names! – where we got two presentations on the topic.
The big question everyone in the room wanted answered, including me, was: would we earn more money under the user-centric payment model?
One presentation used Spotify data, and showed that the overall streaming pie remained the same – obvious – and that the indies’ slice might be slightly less. Not surprisingly, the interest in the model was not great after this.
Then Deezer did a presentation, which also showed that the pie would be the same, and which suggested that we indies would earn about the same. But they made two other points that took a while to sink in.

Can Music Make You Sick? Measuring the price of musical ambition (book extract)

‘Can Music Make You Sick?’ is a new book by Sally Anne Gross and Dr George Musgrave, with its roots in a study of the same name commissioned by charity Help Musicians UK in 2017, about mental health in the music industry.
Gross and Musgrave have shared an excerpt from the book with Music Ally, and have also introduced it.
“This extract below is taken from Chapter 4 of our book entitled ‘The Status of Value’. In this chapter we examine the ways in which musicians seek answers to questions concerning what musical work ‘is’, what it means, and what ‘success’ is, and the impact this can have their emotional wellbeing.
As we suggest: “This findings of this chapter are threefold. Firstly, as artists live out their musical lives increasingly in the public glare online, they report their sense of wellbeing being undermined.

How should artists use Twitch to connect with fans?

Live video streaming service Twitch has been one of the (unwitting) beneficiaries of the global pandemic, as musicians scramble to find a way to compensate for the near-total shutdown of live music. Big Bang Reads: A strong wave of pandemic-era Indian indie music

This is the first in a new series of guest columns for Music Ally from Big Bang Music in India, on the latest trends there.
On July 15, singer Armaan Malik became part of a new initiative by chart-maker Billboard and social video platform Triller called the Top Triller US and Top Triller Global charts.
Malik was crowned as the first artist to top the charts, beating out everyone from 6ix9ine, Katy Perry, Lil Baby and many more in the US. This was followed by Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘G.O.A.T’ taking over number one on Billboard and Triller’s global chart.
Until June, everyone was talking about TikTok challenges being the surefire way for artists to rack up the streams for their music or as just an important promotional tool.
Following the ban on TikTok by the Indian Ministry of Information Technology, it’s become clear that substitutes have quickly swooped in to stake claim to the void left by TikTok, and Triller is certainly one of them, along with HotShots (by Gaana) and even social media giant Instagram with its new ‘Reels’ feature.

Artist ownership is the way to fix Spotify’s broken streaming model (guest column)

Collective artist ownership is the only way to fix Spotify.
If artists can collectively own platforms like Spotify, we can address the underlying problem that drives their incentives and decision making. As a for-profit, publicly traded corporation, Spotify has no responsibility to artists. Their only binding fiduciary responsibility is to seek profit and to increase shareholder value.
This dynamic inherently misaligns shareholder interests with artist interests. It’s why Spotify internally refers to payouts to artists as “content costs” or “costs of revenue.”
To address this, we should assert collective pressure against Spotify to create a trust of artist ownership. In order for Spotify to begin to serve artists interests in any meaningful way, artists must collectively become a powerful shareholding bloc.

Intro: BPI and Music Ally’s Music & Tech Springboard Programme

There’s been a radical shift in the way we make, deliver and experience music over the last decade, driven by innovation and partnerships between the music and technology industries.
Innovation isn’t just about the biggest tech companies though: the music industry has its arms open wide to talented music-tech startups of all kinds.
That’s why we at Music Ally have teamed up with British music industry body the BPI for a new series of videos called The Music & Tech Springboard Programme, which launches today.
This series of videos explains how startups are working with labels and the wider industry already, and offers practical advice from experts on how these relationships can be as positive and effective as possible.
In this first video, BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor and Music Ally CEO Paul Brindley introduce the series, and offer some initial tips for startups on how best to approach and work with the music industry:

Startups explain the lessons they learned working with the music industry

In the Music & Tech Springboard series of videos we’ve produced with the BPI, we’ve heard from collecting societies, lawyers, advisors, accelerators and incubators, and labels about their advice for music/tech startups. But what about hearing from some startups themselves?
That’s what this video does. A group of British startups who’ve all signed licensing deals and/or worked on pilots with music industry rightsholders give us the key lessons they’ve learned along the way, for the benefit of younger companies about to embark on similar journeys.

Music and technology industry advisors offer their tips for tech startups

Technology and music may be two separate industries, but there are a number of people whose jobs revolve around bridging the gap between the two: helping startups to understand the strategies and priorities of rights holders, and helping rightsholders to grasp the needs of startups.
It’s not uncommon to find these advisors working with one or the other side when deals are being done and partnerships sketched out. Two of the prominent examples in the UK are Cliff Fluet, managing director of Eleven Advisory, and Becky Brook, founder of Becky Brook Consulting.
In this video, they offer their perspectives on how the relationship between startups and music companies can be as healthy as possible, including avoiding some of the well-known pitfalls.

Music licensing: the basics that tech startups need to know

If a music-tech startup’s product or service involves making the actual music available, that company will need licences for the music. Understanding how licensing works is one of the first and most important things that these startups need to understand.
At its simplest level, that also means understanding whether you need to be talking to record labels, music publishers, collecting societies or all three. Thankfully, the collecting societies are a good first port of call for information on this.
This video picks the brains of executives from the two main collecting societies in the UK: Jez Bell, chief licensing officer at PPL, the society which looks after recorded music; and Nick Edwards, head of online at PRS for Music, which represents songwriters, composers and music publishers.

How can you get press coverage for your music/tech startup?

Like any industry, music has its own set of trade publications and websites that are pored over by executives and staff in the labels, publishers and collecting societies. Meanwhile, there’s also a thriving technology industry media covering startups of all kinds, music/tech included.
Getting featured by key media, from news stories and founder profiles to bigger features about the technology or trend that you’re working within, can be really useful in building your credibility with the music industry – or simply putting you on the radar of the innovation teams working within labels.
In this video, Stuart Dredge, editor at Music Ally, gives a journalist’s perspective on what makes a startup interesting.

The future of music releases. Albums vs EP’s vs Playlists vs Mixtapes

The album isn’t completely dead and the playlist isn’t yet the be-all and end-all – which means that artists are somewhat creatively discombobulated in what is really a curious transition period. It’ll be around an hour long, presented by our SVP of digital strategy Patrick Ross, and will cover a range of platforms, case studies and lessons for artists.

How K Camp’s ‘Lottery’ (aka ‘Renegade’) went viral – and what happened next

Atlanta rapper K Camp began releasing mixtapes in 2011, before signing to Interscope in 2014, building up a loyal following. However, the release of his track ‘Lottery’ in early 2019 changed everything.
The track initially had a slow build through platforms including Instagram, YouTube and Triller, but then a few months later users of TikTok pounced on the track. It’s since been used in nearly 30m TikTok videos that have collectively generated more than 3bn views.
How did that happen, and what happened next as K Camp and his team capitalised on the viral ‘Lottery’ (or ‘Renegade’ as many of those TikTokers knew the track) craze?

Crowdfunding is still effective – and it’s still not begging (guest column)

This article is an excerpt from Ari Herstand’s second edition of How to Make It in the New Music Business:
In 2009, I was co-managing one of my favorite Minneapolis bands with my girlfriend. I was actively touring, playing 100+ dates a year myself, so the day-to-day duties were mostly handled by her. The band had built up a loyal grass-roots following and were selling out venues in a five-state region. They were bringing 600 people to their local shows every couple months and were becoming known on the festival circuit.
They were making just enough money to support the five band members’ living expenses while on tour, but had virtually nothing left over to invest. They had the material for their next album, but we didn’t know where we were going to come up with the funds. No matter how we crunched the numbers, no amount of gigging or merch sales was going to bring in the $10,000+ we needed to make the album.
Then one day, through creative Googling, I stumbled upon this new site called Kickstarter. It had just launched a couple months prior, but a Brooklyn-based musician, Allison Weiss, had raised $7,700 from just 200 people through what this new startup called “crowdfunding.”

Indian music industry debates potential for paid music subs

“I think we’re on course,” said Blaise Fernandes, the president and CEO of India’s official recorded music industry body the Indian Music Industry, when asked on a status update on the country’s plan to break into the top ten of the world’s biggest music markets by 2022, at this year’s edition of the annual All About Music conference on Tuesday.
“For us to get to the top ten, we’ve got to double our revenues, we’re at $150 million, we’ve got to get to $300 million,” Fernandes told moderator, Outdustry’s Ed Peto at a panel entitled ‘Musicnomics: Making Sense Of Money In The Music Business’.
Among the drivers that Fernandes said would help India in reaching its destination, is an “underexploited” public performance market; the estimated 830 million smartphone users the country is expected to have by 2020; and a “$2.5 billion digital advertising market” owing to which “you’re going to see a lot sync opportunities”.

The next TikTok? 10 more short-video apps taking China by storm

TikTok is currently one of the most popular social apps globally, and it’s making plenty of waves in the music industry, from playing an early role in making ‘Old Town Road’ a hit and becoming an exciting platform for music marketing campaigns, to sparking copyright arguments with collecting societies and speculation about its licensing talks with labels.
If you need a reminder, TikTok was originally launched by Chinese technology company Bytedance, as the international version of its existing Chinese app Douyin. In late 2017, Bytedance acquired the similar (and hugely popular) Musical.ly app and merged it with TikTok, before throwing some serious marketing welly at TikTok to make it a global hit.
So, TikTok came from China, but it’s not alone. In fact, there are a host of ‘short-video’ apps in China that are proving popular alongside Douyin. Music Ally (us, not the app that merged with TikTok) asked Kanjian Music, our partner for the recently-launched Music Ally China, to tell us about some of those other apps. Jennifer Li from Kanjian researched 10 of the most interesting.
They might not break out globally to the same extent that TikTok has, but their features and differences to Douyin may offer some useful hints at how this app category will develop in the coming months and years around the world, not just in China.

Social media newsfeeds are dying. What’s the future of sharing? (guest column)

This guest column comes from Tim Heineke, founder and CEO of I AM POP.
Social media, the poster child of the internet revolution, is losing its influence to such an extent that even Mark Zuckerberg has accepted the decline of the newsfeed.
Is this, as Zuckerberg suggests, simply an issue of users becoming wary of giving data to social platforms or are there wider reasons for social’s decline? Even before his announcement, the newsfeed had long been too crowded to deliver a meaningful and interactive experience and an unreliable means for artists and businesses to reach their audiences.
As platforms get more popular, their newsfeeds become overloaded with content, requiring algorithms to regulate what is displayed to users. This creates a ‘negative network effect’ where an increasing number of users sees the algorithm prioritise friends’ posts over other content, to ensure people feel that their time on Facebook is well spent.
