BMG signs ‘deepened’ deal with e-commerce giant Alibaba in China

The music business’s gold rush to China has intensified – as BMG exclusively commits 1.9m songs and 600,000 recordings to a new digital partnership with Alibaba in the region. A distribution agreement between Alibaba and BMG was first signed nearly two years ago and has now been extended for another three years. If you want to know how big a deal this is for BMG, you only need look at the above photo, and note the presence of Bertelsmann boss Thomas Rabe alongside BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch and others. According to the IFPI, China generated $169.7m for recorded music rights-holders last year – up 63.8% on 2014 – making it the 14th biggest region for labels and artists. However, with a population of more than 1.35bn people, China’s annual per capita (person) spend on recorded music last year was just $0.10. The population of China is three times the size of Japan and the USA – the world’s two biggest music markets – combined and therefore holds a wealth of potential. BMG claims ‘Europe’s breakthrough act of the summer’ – with artist dropped by UMG and Warner

BMG is calling its artist Laura Pergolizzi (LP) ‘the breakout success of 2016 in Europe’ – while suggesting that the star’s bumpy music industry journey so far speaks volumes about its own approach. US singer-songwriter LP was previously signed to no less than six previous labels, including deals with Warner and Universal. Her first BMG release, the single ‘Lost On You’ has already reached Number One on iTunes in 17 countries including Spain, Austria Poland, France, Turkey, Romania, Israel, Benelux, Luxembourg. It’s gone two-times platinum in Italy, while hitting No.1 on Shazam in six countries including Turkey, Belgium and Bulgaria. Lost On You is an airplay chart-topper in Greece, Latvia, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Russia and attracted 16m streams in its first week of release on Spotify. Now BMG is set to release LP’s new album, also called ‘Lost On You’, in Continental Europe on December 9. Savoretti’s fifth album – and second with BMG – entered the UK album chart at six last week. Most recently BMG took both Rick Astley and Blink-182 – long since given up on by major labels – to Number One in the Official UK Album Charts.
