Wondery talks music and podcasts: ‘This really is its own medium’

Podcast production studio Wondery was founded in 2016, and is best known for shows including Dirty John – recently made into a Netflix TV series – American History, Business Wars and Dr Death.
Wondery is also one of the biggest independent podcast publishers in the US, with a monthly audience of 7.4 million Americans in March 2019, and 37.5m downloads and streams of its shows globally that month, according to analytics firm PodTrac.
April was also the month when Wondery came onto the music industry’s radar, thanks to the announcement of a partnership with Universal Music Group to develop original podcasts based on UMG’s artists, labels and catalogue.

Spotify explains why it’s backing Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency

The recent leaks were correct: music-streaming Spotify is on board as one of the first backers of Facebook’s new Libra cryptocurrency.
The social network will launch a cryptocurrency called Libra in 2020, complete with a wallet developed by the company’s new Calibra subsidiary. And backing all this is The Libra Association, which Facebook says will be an independent, not-for-profit organisation.
Spotify is one of that body’s founding ‘technology and marketplaces’ partners, alongside the likes of eBay, Uber and Lyft, with MasterCard, Visa, PayPal and Stripe among the partners in its ‘payments’ category.
