Research claims 3% of YouTube channels get 90% of views

Views are no longer the most important currency on YouTube: it’s been watch-time for a while now – as shown by the fact that the platform’s new minimum requirements for ‘partner’ status include 4,000 hours of watch-time in the last year, rather than a certain number of views.
So, a new study of YouTube based on view-counts isn’t quite as valuable as it may seem, although there’s still some interesting analysis of the spread of views on Google’s video service.
“The top 3% most viewed channels upload at least 20% of all videos and receive the vast majority of all views, up to nearly 90% in 2016,” claimed the study, from Mathias Bärtl at the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences.

Big services can’t find big hits’ writers according to NOIs

Can Spotify, Google and Amazon *really* not identify who to pay publishing royalties to for Drake’s global hit ‘God’s Plan’? Or for Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’? Or for Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’ or Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana’ or… Well, you get the picture.
Artist-rights blog The Trichordist has published a post from industry lawyer Chris Castle in which he mines the database of NOI (‘notice of intention’) filings with the US Copyright Office, which in theory are how streaming services acquire a compulsory licence for a track when they don’t have details of a song’s copyright owner.

CISAC-commissioned study criticises safe harbour rules

It will come as no surprise that a study commissioned by collecting-societies body CISAC criticises ‘safe harbour’ exceptions in copyright law.
But the study, from Ashbel Smith Professor Stan Liebowitz of the University of Texas at Dallas, is a good summary of the arguments being marshalled by music rightsholders as they campaign for reform of those laws.

Liberty Media offers $1.16bn for 40% iHeartMedia stake

US radio group iHeartMedia is battling to restructure its debts in order to avoid bankruptcy, and its latest potential saviour is a fascinating one: Liberty Media.
That’s the same Liberty Media that’s the majority owner of satellite-radio firm SiriusXM, which recently acquired a $480m stake in Pandora, which competes directly with iHeartMedia’s iHeartRadio service.

Live Nation reported record revenues of $10.3bn for 2017

2017 was a good year for Live Nation in financial terms, with the live-entertainment giant’s revenues rising by 24% to $10.3bn last year, according to its latest financial results.
86 million people attended concerts put on by Live Nation, which was up 21% year-on-year, as the company hailed “its seventh consecutive year of record results” with revenue growth in concerts, sponsorship and ticketing.

Non-musical content key to UMG and WMG’s latest moves

Two separate announcements from major labels Universal Music and Warner Music shed some light on how they’re tackling content around the music of their artists.
UMG has appointed Celine Joshua to a new position as general manager, commercial, content and artist strategy. Her role will include heading a new label called ’10:22 pm’ focused on “signing and developing recording artists, social media influencers and digital media creators with a focus on creating multimedia content and advancing new forms of storytelling”.
