Spotify ‘Bulgarian’ scam fuels call from MMF for user-centric licensing debate

The ‘Bulgarian scam’ on Spotify, revealed earlier this week by MBW, allegedly involved an entity uploading a collection of sub one-minute tracks to Spotify; then arranging them into a few playlists.
Devices tied to Premium Spotify accounts were then used to stream those playlists round the clock: even at a monthly cost of nearly $12k for 1,200 accounts, the potential revenues paid out from those streams could be $288k or even more.
Anyway, music managers body the MMF thinks the revelation of the scam should reignite discussion within the music industry about a switch to ‘user-centric’ licensing for streaming services.

Brit Awards: Stormzy and Dua Lipa triumph as host shades Spotify

Apple Music and YouTube may have been the key digital and sponsorship partners for last night’s Brit Awards, but it was Spotify that got an (admittedly-unwanted) shout-out from the event’s host, comedian Jack Whitehall.
Speaking about two-gong winner Dua Lipa: “If she had a pound for every time someone listened to her on Spotify, they would finally be paying an acceptable level of royalty,” said Whitehall.
Given that the 10 tracks in the ‘popular’ section of her Spotify profile alone have done more than 1.9bn streams, that’s not an idea to float in front of Spotify’s potential investors…

Facebook signs licensing deal with processing-hub ICE

The music agreements keep coming for Facebook, which now has a deal with online licensing and processing hub ICE – the joint venture between European collecting societies PRS for Music, STIM and GEMA.
“The licence covers Facebook, Instagram, Oculus and Messenger and provides online music licensing for over 290,000 rightsholders, across 160 territories,” explained ICE in its announcement of the deal.
Can you spot what’s missing from that last sentence? Facebook’s WhatsApp wasn’t included, and that’s not a mistake.
