Samsung tipped to unlock the FM radios in its smartphones

Samsung will soon be unlocking the FM radio chip in its smartphones in the US and Canada, according to the maker of the NextRadio app.
Note, this isn’t (yet) an official announcement from Samsung itself, but NextRadio owner TagStation claimed that the move will mean owners of the smartphones can listen to broadcast-radio while consuming less mobile data and battery life.

Pandora wants to create ‘the podcast genome project’

Pandora signalled its interest in the world of podcasts in late 2015 when it became the ‘exclusive streaming partner’ for the second series of podcast Serial.
Now its recently-appointed CEO Roger Lynch says the company is ready to double down with the intention of creating “the podcast genome project” – referring to its famous system for classifying music.
Variety reported on Lynch’s comments at CES, in which he suggested that Pandora is also aiming to shake up the way podcast advertising works, with better-monetising formats than the standard method of podcasters reading out messages from their advertisers.

Facebook confirms plans to focus more on ‘personal moments’

Rumours have been bubbling for several months that Facebook was planning a shift for its news feed back towards ‘personal’ content from friends and family, rather than ‘public’ posts and content from brands and media.
Now CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed the changes, which he says are part of the social network’s determination to make its usage “time well spent” – even if that means people spend less time on Facebook.
“Recently we’ve gotten feedback from our community that public content – posts from businesses, brands and media – is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other,” wrote Zuckerberg on Facebook.
